J.J. Bernal
Born:1859 Died:1913 Maker's Mark:"B" next to the maker's mark on G.S. Garcia spurs from Elko, very rare "JJB" on independent spurs
Jose Jesus Bernal spent the majority of his life working metal and making bits and spurs in San Jose, California working for himself or in other partnerships. He is most famous though for his work in G.S. Garcia’s shop from 1899 to 1904 as he is one of the few makers who had the honor of being able to add their own stamp to the normal Garcia marking. His mark is a B stamped in addition to the other Garcia markings. Bits and spurs made while he worked for himself are sometimes marked JJB and GUARANTEED. After he left Garcia’s shop, he moved to San Francisco for a couple years until the earthquake in 1906 destroyed the business and he moved back to San Jose where he and J.F. Echavarria would have a partnership from 1909 to 1911, afterwards he operated his own shop until his death in 1913.
